British Highways And Byways From A Motor Car Being A Record Of A Five Thousand Mile Tour In England Wales And Scotland Thomas Dowler Murphy Books
I like reading Travel Writing, especially some of the older books in this genre. This book, a 1908 expedition of England by motorcar, captured the time period and geography as modern travel books don't. It makes me want to travel in the author's tire tracks. I just might.Product details

British Highways And Byways From A Motor Car Being A Record Of A Five Thousand Mile Tour In England Wales And Scotland Thomas Dowler Murphy Books Reviews
A unique "travel" book in many ways. Mr. Murphy writes a charming journal of his sojourn with his wife in
a 'motorcar' in 1908. This was Great Britian BEFORE the horrific wars when life in the villages was
almost medieval. Reading between the lines, you are able to garner the pulse of the people (antipathy
toward the lords who own most of the land) keeping them in almost poverty. I was amazed at the number
of cathedrals they visited (30) and many, many castle and abbey ruins. For the most part, the folks
in the villages 'detest' the motor car.. Even tho every village has a pictuesque church, 'faith' was
on the wane..with small numbers of people attending Sunday services. I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
It was reproduced by Nabu Public Domain because of their commitment to preservation of printed works
worldwide and consider the book valuable. I could not agree more!! (I bought the paperback version..
not the ).
It's a pity the author couldn't have seen to write about the car he used, and how it handled the roads meant for horses. Instead, he focuses on things which are probably still there in England, castles, pubs, famous author's houses. So many times he praises his hotels for having a special "garage" newly constructed for the motor car, and never does he describe that, focusing instead on the interiors of inns, the beauty of moors, and so on.
